Lacking necessary support, Affordable Care Act replacement bill tabled in House

House Republicans declined Friday to put their Affordable Care Act replacement bill up for a vote in front of the full membership, tabling the legislation for now and perhaps longer.
According to published reports, President Donald Trump and House Majority Leader Paul Ryan lobbied hard over the last two days to garner the necessary support for the Republican-sponsored American Health Care Act, but they could not get the needed votes.

On Friday, Ryan advised Trump the bill would not pass, and the president signed off on not going forward with the vote, the House majority leader said.

"We came really close today, but we came up short," Ryan said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

With the Republican bill stalling, the Affordable Care Act remains in place, and Ryan indicated it could remain in effect "for the foreseeable future."

"I don't know how long it's going to take to replace this law," Ryan said.
