Equal Employment Opportunity Commission: Fighting discrimination

Applicants, as well as employees, are protected under federal law against discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or disability. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces the federal laws protecting employees from discrimination, and most employers with at least 15 employees who worked at least 20 weeks in the previous year or current year are covered by the EEOC.
If an employee decides to file discrimination charges, there is a time limit for filing, and the employee must contact the EEOC as soon as possible if he or she believes discrimination has taken place. This allows the EEOC to begin its investigation into the alleged discrimination. The EEOC also works to prevent discrimination through outreach and education and by providing information about the equal employment opportunity program while ensuring employers comply with EEOC regulations. On the EEOC’s website (eeoc.gov), you can find a list of the types of discrimination, as well as information on the process of filing a discrimination report.

Per EEOC guidelines, it is illegal for employers to publish an ad for a job stating they prefer or discourage someone from applying based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (if 40 or older), disability, or other genetic information. It’s also illegal for employers to make any decisions about job assignments or promotions based on the classifications stated previously or make any pay decisions based on these classes.
